Asgard II prints for two Maritime projects.
This notice has been archived.

  • This print is taken from a painting by Pat Dover, Wicklow.
  • Pat has painted Asgard II many times, especially on her many visits to the port of Wicklow.
  • He painted from a picture taken by John Manning Irish Coast Guard helicopter crewman.
  • It was photographed on 10th July 2005.
  • Asgard II led out the tall ships from Waterford on that day.
  • It was a calm day, emphasised by the slackness of the sails.
  • It will benefit the new “Pride of Ireland” fund.
  • It will also benefit the Maritime Institute.
  • I am very happy with Pat’s work.
  • I am also happy to share it, that more people will enjoy it.
  • John and Pat, when they heard of my proposal were happy to waive all rights.
  • The prints will only be done to order.
  • In that way all monies will be accounted for.
  • The Maritime Institute is a registered charity.
  • Pride of Ireland will be applying for charitable status.
  • Prints will cost €35.
  • €10 will go to the Pride of Ireland fund.
  • A further €10 will go to the Maritime Institute.

The €15 will eventually cover costs which will be subsidised in the beginning.
Why Pride of Ireland? This is based on Spirit of Adventure which has been running for 40 years in New Zealand, “www.spiritofadventure.org.nz”. Its aim is youth development. Its medium is sail training. 40 youngsters (15-18) drawn from 40 different schools/colleges spend 10 days on “Spirit of New Zealand” a 45m steel hulled, barque rigged sailing vessel that can sail in most weather conditions off the Southern Island of New Zealand. This weather in similar or worse than we experience off the west coast of Ireland during winter. The intention would be to take the ship to the Mediterranean over winter and fly trainees out to her thus avoiding the worst winter weather. The Spirit of Adventure Trust has a proven record of cross cultural training over its 40 years. They take away mobile phones and access to internet so that 40 young people, all strangers are brought together learning teamwork and other life skills in a spirit of cooperation. Those who sailed on Asgard II may never have gone to sea again for whatever reason but treasure a memory and camaraderie for the rest of their lives. Hopefully the “Spirit of Ireland” will build on this and take it even further. Further information: “www.prideofirelandtrust.org” and “nohagan@prideofirelandtrust.org”.
Why the Maritime Institute? It was founded in 1941 to promote awareness of the sea and our dependence on sea trade. In the same year Irish shipping acquired its first vessel to help sustain our imports during WW II. The fortunes of the Maritime Institute have waned over many years but a lot of effort has been put into restoring the National Maritime Museum in DunLaoghaire. We now need to make the Institute relevant to the 21st century and beyond. My unsaid promise to the late Dr. John deCourcey Ireland was that I would try and realise his dream that the children of Ireland would learn their maritime heritage. This has been realised in part by obtaining sponsorship from the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO) for “Follow the Fleet” and inviting Robin Middleton CBE to Dublin last April to give a very well received lecture on the Napoli. I am working on a lecture on the Coastguard 1822 – 2014 for April 2014. Meantime you can join the Maritime Institute for €35 a year (€25 OAPs) and help us rebuild, refocus and reinvigorate the Institute. Further Information, the institutes web-site: “www.mariner.ie” or from me. For Maritime history previously carried on our website, can be seen on “www.lugnad.ie”.
