Trawling Under Sail in Dublin Bay
Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire
Wednesday February 18th at 8pm
Throughout the nineteenth century, and into the twentieth, a large fleet of wooden gaff-rigged sailing beam-trawlers existed in a largely unchanged state in Dublin Bay.
The first of the fleet of sailing trawlers and their crews had originated in Brixham, Devon, and an interchange of boats and people continued between Brixham and Dublin throughout the nineteenth century,
There was inter-marriage between Brixham and Ringsend people and many of the local names still reflect this connection. May of the trawlers were built in Ringsend on the banks of the Dodder, while others were built in Brixham and Dartmouth.
Kingstown (Dún Laoghaire) harbour was frequently used as a base by the sailing trawlers and some of the crews eventually settled in Kingstown.
Cormac F. Lowth has brought together a unique amount of information about these fishing boats and their crews, that includes details of the boats and the names of their crews, their methods of fishing and the building of the vessels
In addition he has assembled a large amount of unique and rare illustrations and photographs relative to the subject which will be shown on the night
