The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) is dedicated to the conservation and better understanding of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) in Irish waters through research and education. Since its foundation in 1990, the IWDG has increased awareness of Irish cetaceans and their habitats through a broad range of research, conservation and education initiatives.
Paul Kiernan, with a Masters in Animal Welfare through the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UCD is deeply involved with these initiatives as Welfare Officer with the IWDG. Paul works with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine where he first developed an interest in the oceans and cetacean welfare when living and working on the North West coast of Ireland.
In his illustrated lecture, Paul will explore key issues that concern the IWDG relating to the 24 species of cetaceans present in Irish waters and the habitats which are so important to their survival. The talk will address the importance of cetaceans to the marine ecosystem and the factors which are affecting their survival, including live-strandings, eco-tourism and the phenomenon of our solitary dolphins.
